Blurb/Rating:

It’s the worst day of Charlie Everson’s life. Not only can she no longer fit into her clothes—disaster for any public relations director—but also her first love, the sexy super-successful Brian Tendai, is her new CEO, the last person she ever expected to run into. Seeing him again tumbles Charlie back into her past. There are still so many unanswered questions: he’s convinced she left him, she’s convinced he left her. Charlie minimizes the ‘ex’ factor. Tell that to her emotions that are running wild.

But Brian’s not there to rekindle their romance. He’s overseeing Queenswood Communications’ recent merger after a hostile takeover. Guess whose name is at the top of the list?

They agree to one night together, just the one, then it’s back to business as normal. Or is it?

The Joy of Comfort Eating is a contemporary romance novel set in cosmopolitan Johannesburg.

Excerpt

Her gaze dropped before she had a chance to stop her thoughts. Beautiful hands, long fingers…. Remember what those fingers used to do?

“It’s been…” he started.

“Years,” she finished.

“Oh. You already know each other.” Shelley twitched her nose.

“You could say that.” Brian grinned. “You haven’t changed a bit.”

That voice. How could she have forgotten that voice? He’d always sounded like he should advertise premium deep-roasted coffee.

Charlie adjusted her waistband as she felt the elastic dig into her flesh, and pulled her sweater further down over her backside. “What happened to the big music career?”

Brian scratched behind his ear. “Well, that was a long time ago. What have you been up to?”

He looks exactly the same. Dark coarse hair close cut, solid frame, the only difference being the dark beard around his lips. He smelled of lemons and spices, and of a time long ago when they’d had dreams and acres of future waiting to be explored.

“What have I been up to? Not much, really.” Charlie took in the pink shirt, the rolled-up sleeves, and the opened collar. Brian-Badass-Tendai does corporate. And he does it well.

Charlie noted the change in temperature, the heat rising, the sound of hearts beating in sync.

Had to be nostalgia. One never forgot their first love, did they? Just hormones.

But if she had to look at those hands again, the curve of his mouth. Chocolate fudge brownies—

“It’s good to see you again,” he said.

With lashings of cream oozing over the spongy goodness—

“I have to get back to my desk,” she explained.

And crushed pecan nuts tossed over—

“Charlie. It’s good to see you again,” he repeated.

She walked over to her desk.

Chocolate-fudge-brownies-with-lashings-of-cream-oozing-over-the-spongy-goodness-and-crushed-pecan-nuts-tossed-over—

And a big-eyed fly stuck fast in the sauce.

Definitely the worst day of her life.

My Review

Rating: 5 wine glasses (I’m so addicted to the Djinn series)

Please excuse me while I go bang my head against a wall for a couple of hours. *leaves room and sounds of banging from the next room can be audibly heard* Those of you who know me, know I’ve been craving for more of the Djinn series from the second I put the book down. In fact, I distinctly remember raving so much about Djinn, that more than a few of my bookish friends had to tell me to shut it multiple times. Sure, it’s not really appropriate to text someone at 2am in the morning to rave about the book, but that’s how much I loved Djinn. And then the waiting game started. Luckily for hardcore Laura Catherine fans like myself, she released two novella’s before the second book in the series, Blooders, releases in December.

Now you all know I am not a very big fan of Will, who is the predominant character in the novella’s, but nevertheless, I devoured it until there was nothing left of it. Which, you know, took me about 25 minutes. 25 gut-wrenching minutes. Man, I might just be changing my mind a little bit over who I’m rooting for. this novella showed a whole new side to Will, one we don’t get to see often and it had my heart torn in two. But, I still stand by my choice to root for the underdog (those of you who have read the books, do not take that as a literal meaning) and can only hope Blooders will allow me some satisfaction. Oh, who am I kidding? Will is really starting to grow on me. I totally blame all of it on the Queen.

Will’s emotions in this book really gripped me. I could relate to him on so many levels. The absence of grief, the doubt and insecurity. and then he goes and does the honourable thing, instead of just dropping the mic and declaring himself out. I can totally respect that. Will Choose really helped me to understand Will’s persona a bit more than I did and I adore Laura Catherine for bringing us this story.

Whilst it seemed to somewhat satisfy my craving for more of the Djinn series and no matter how long I delayed reading this small piece of the Djinn world I was gifted with by the author, it is still only a novella, and I will be trying to patiently wait for the next installment to make it’s appearance. This novella is definitely worth a read, especially if you’re waiting on the edge of your seat for the next book to release. It started off where Djinn ended, and it was a bittersweet read right through to the end.

My Review

My rating: 4 Glasses of Wine

I’m going to spare you all from reading the synopsis. Because really, I’m here to tell you about why you should read the book. Not tell the story in my own words. So… Why should you read the book? I have a couple of simple reasons.

It’s well-written. One of the reasons why I enjoy Carmen  Falcone’s so much is because she has a way with words that really draws you into the characters and the setting, and a lot of romance authors struggle to get that right in my opinion.Carmen Falcone’s writing is always brilliant, and I have a serious case of grabby hands when it comes to her books.

Not only is the book well-written, but the story is amazing. Intriguing and sexy, this book had me hot, bothered and on the edge of my seat the whole night through. The plot twists were amazing and the ending was definitely not what I expected. I highly recommend reading this one, in fact just go ahead and buy all her books in one go, it’s that good.

At 24 years old, Holly Scallenger has the perfect life. Everything a girl could want; a beautiful man, a stunning home, as well as being in the midst of preparing for the wedding of her dreams. This all vanishes the night she catches her fiancé, Brandon Morgan, in bed with her worst nightmare, Donna Sinclair, just a week before Holly is set to walk down the aisle.

Attempting to recover from his betrayal, Holly swears off the affections of men in order to pick up the pieces of her crumbling life. Unfortunately, meeting Jake ‘Hooligan’ Peters is not part of her plan. The tall, dark-haired and handsome as hell med student, sweeps Holly away from the pain of her past and reveals to her the bright future that lays ahead. That is, until she falls pregnant just as Jake begins his internship at P&E; his family’s hospital.

Will this love at first sight lead her to the fairytale she has always craved? Or, will she fall victim to a betrayal of the heart yet again?

Excerpt

“You know what? Eat what you want to eat. Hell, eat Donna for all I care.” Angrily, she punched the red disconnect button on the screen.

Her phone rang again a second later; the same picture flashed on the screen. “What do you want, Brandon?”

“You okay?” he asked.

“Am I okay?” She gave her ‘you’re unbelievable’ giggle, wanting to switch the phone off yet again. I’m so sick and tired of playing this game with him. “No, I’m not, but I will be, Brandon,” she bit his name out with pure venom.

He cussed. “Is it that time of the month again?”

“You know what? Go fuck yourself. I can’t do this anymore… you, you sleaze ball, and two-timing piece of shit.” She took a deep breath. “I’m leaving you. And I think it’s better we do this now, than waste two years of our lives with each other.”

“Just wait for me, Holls, okay? I’ll be right there. I love you baby.”

About The Author

Lia Riley writes offbeat romance. After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, she scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. She counts shooting vodka with a Ukranian mechanic in Antarctica, sipping yerba mate with gauchos in Chile and swilling XXXX with stationhands in Outback Australia among her accomplishments.

A British literature fanatic at heart, Lia considers Mr. Darcy and Edward Rochester as her fictional boyfriends. Her very patient husband doesn’t mind. Much. When not torturing heroes (because c’mon, who doesn’t love a good tortured hero?), Lia herds unruly chickens, camps, beach combs, daydreams about as-of-yet unwritten books, wades through a mile-high TBR pile and schemes yet another trip. Right now, Icelandic hot springs and Scottish castles sound pretty sweet.

She and her family live in Northern California.

My Review

**My rating: 5 stars**

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Love, love, love this! No seriously, I adore this book. This book was funny and sweet and pulled at all the right heartstrings. Brightwater seems like the kind of place I’d want to live if I lived in small town USA.Lia’s characters are refreshing. While they still share tons of similarities with your everyday romantic hero and heroine, they also managed to be completely different.

Annie is what I’m sure most moms out there feel. She tries to hide her insecurities and exhaustion behind her “all-is-fine” façade. She’s amazing. I loved her so much. She’s by far one of my most favourite heroine’s that I’ve read about lately. All she really wants is to make her son’s life fantastic and she’s doing a pretty amazing with that. I loved the little snippets we see of her blog and even her vegetarian food sound delicious. She’s all-round awesome.

Then we have Sawyer Kane. How HOT is that name? I completely had the same reaction that Annie’s step-daughter (or ex-stepdaughter) had. He’s pretty much everything a reader could wish for in a hero… he’s the sheriff and a cowboy! I loved that from the moment he heard Annie was back in town, he set out to make her his. He knew what he wanted and he went out and got it. I also had a few ovary-exploding moments whenever he had a moment with Annie’s little guy.

The whole story was amazing, from the little descriptions of the town to the conflict between the Kane’s and the Carson’s to pretty much everything about it.I can’t wait to read more about Brightwater and the pretty amazing characters in that little town, perfect reading for that cold winters evening, or that warm summers’ day. Lia Riley wowed me with Last First Kiss and I will most definitely be returning to read more of her books.

Synopsis

(Back blurb)

Mr.

Sandman, send me a dream, ta da da da…..Seventeen year old Chasity Blake

knows the Sandman is just a silly children’s story parents tell their children

to get them to sleep. At least she thought it was, until the day a mysterious,

light golden sand appeared in her hands during a high school prank that went

horribly wrong. A sand that has the power to send anyone it touches into a

deep, sound sleep.

Fearing she

had lost her mind, Chasity soon discovers the shocking truth of her heritage-

she is a Dream Caster. Chasity was never supposed to be raised on the Domain,

or what humans call Earth and she is forced to return to her true birth place,

Revera – the world of Dreams.

However, in

Revera there is no balance between good, the Light Casters, and darkness, the

Shadow Casters, and Chasity is caught square in the middle. She soon learns

that there is no place for anyone containing both the light and the darkness

within them, and the shocking truth that if anyone in Revera ever discovered

her shadow self, Chasity would be thrown into the Oblivion – the world of

Nightmares.

Dreams are

always more than they seem, and this time Chasity is going to discover just how

different they can be.

Two teasers

Excerpt One

WO SETS OF FOOTSTEPS made barely a sound on the rough and weathered wood

as they walked across the bridge that led from Main Pacific to the Glands. The

streetlights were dimmed  as dusk began

to settle and last vestiges of light from the setting sun were fading to night.

The lumbering clouds were moving in, blocking out any light from the two moons

that shone overhead, even the stars seemed less bright dotted across their

velvet backdrop. With his golden dust Graig Chen could conjure and wield

anything by simply believing in its reality. If he wanted it to be real, it

would be.

The Reverse was the most painful thing either of them had ever

experienced, but Liam, a healer and Graig’s only confidant, had promised him

that they would be able to live in the Domain like normal Nomads, humans.

Graig and his pregnant fiancé, were fleeing from

their home world in secret, having no other choice if they desired a normal

life for their unborn child.

They knew neither of their families would ever

understand, even though it had been his grandmother who had always said, the heart wants, what the heart wants.

How could he have known that his heart would want a Shadow Caster, and not just

any ordinary Shadow Caster. She was special, or at least her family was. She

was expected to uphold the family line with her offspring,  Graig knew that did not include carrying the

child of a Light Caster.

The two lovers could never live in peace, not since

the balance between good and evil inside Revera was thrown into upheaval. There

were only two choices for casters like them, either light or dark. The balance

could not accommodate a person containing both, so for his child’s sake they

had no choice but to leave Revera. Live like normal humans in the Domain, or

what humans would call reality. He’d found a perfect place, one he’d made sure

no one would ever find, not even his two best friends.

They knew about the relationship, they’d been there

when he’d first laid eyes on her, tried to talk him out of it, to forget the

blonde bombshell that would only cause him darkness and misery, but without her

his life would be spent in darkness and misery.

Her silver blonde hair and bright blue eyes had

done him in, if only he’d seen the bow that she’d aimed straight at his heart.

If it hadn’t been for his love when arrow hit, and for Liam, a healer, he

wouldn’t be in his currant predicament; trying to get him and her off this

dimential world that most people would call make-believe, but Revera was far

from that. It was the world of dreams, and Graig was a Level Four Caster whose

mission was to seek out Selene, their only live Somnium. It was on one of these

very missions that he had met the love of his live, the one woman he couldn’t

live without, and he didn’t care if she had black dust, he didn’t care that she

was a Shadow Caster, or what some would call a nightmare wielder. Yes, those

horrible dreams that leave you paralyzed with fear are actually wielded by

Caster’s, not some grave impression of ones subconscious. They are responsible

for doubts and forgotten dreams. She was his nightmare, and a nightmare he was

prepared to die for.

He knew deep down that she would would never

survive living in Revera and he was unable to cope with the Oblivion, wherever

it was. Oblivion was the realm of the Shadow Casters, created when Selene

casted out Magdelena, one of the first Shadow Casters, who was the third

Somnium, as a consequence for the death of her brother, Darius, the second

Somnium. Magdelena had no realm to call her own, so she created Oblivion by

focusing her hatred toward Selene, a world that could exist inside Revera, far

from Selene’s sight. For years, Selene tried to find it, but as long as the

Sodivic bloodline flowed through Shadow Caster’s vanes, Oblivion would never be

found by a Light Caster.

Sodivic blood was the key to Oblivion’s secrecy,

and Magdalena’s family line. There were many Sodivic’s since the dawning of

Oblivion but Magdelena reigned over them all. Graig had met many Sodivic’s on

his quests, each meeting always ended up in a bloody mess, and in all the years

he had encountered them, not one had ever

shown any kind of mercy or remorse. They were sadistic and couldn’t be

reasoned with. He had been taught from a young age, if you see a Sodivic, you

kill it. That was the number one rule taught to the Level One Dream Casters.

His fiancé was the only one that proved his theory

wrong. Over the past century, their bloodline had been busy dying out, leaving

her one of the few powerful Shadow Casters left.

Graig would pay dearly for loving her if her father

ever found them, and he couldn’t even think about what would happen to the

unborn child she carried.

Craig squeezed the hand that was resting tightly

inside his own grip as they neared the end of the bridge.

“Were almost there, my love. Not much longer.”

“You’re sure nobody followed us?” Her eyes were

wild, searching everywhere in the darkness.

“I’m sure. Besides, they won’t be able to see us,

remember.” He opened his hand, just to make sure she hadn’t forgotten what he

was, and threw more golden sand into the air, shielding them from anything that

tried to followed them.

Then he heard it, a crunch. He stopped abruptly and

she slammed into him. One second of doubt was all it took to break the spell,

and before he could realized that doubt, they were surrounded by Nimgolians,

the biggest and wicket shadow hounds ever imagined. They were veil, and

reminded him of a Rottweiler that had chased him ones in the Domain.

Only his touch can save her from the shift that could

Disease. It shadows over, and bends everything to its will.

against the dark magic of our enemies, but I am afraid it had come at a cost.            Inflicted with the dark disease, I
was lost in every possible way; and they were wrong – death does not bring you
your true purpose. After death, I am more misplaced than ever, but only because
I am immune to guidance. I relive my darkest moments over and over again, just
to remind myself of who I am.
I am the destined one. The haltered. For me, there is no love and
no release, only destruction; but I am on a path to be free of its burden. I do love and I will have it, absorb it
and never, ever, let all its enchanting affections go. In order to be with
love, there is only one path to lead me there; through this war. But nothing
and no one knows what awaits on the other side, or what lies have been
afflicted upon us about the after. Remorse is an infection I no longer want. I
had made apocalyptic mistakes, and will probably keep on faltering forward. It
has become my only direction in a reality where there is none. To him, there is
no him, if there is no me. He is bound to me, and I hated it more than I will
ever confess. His cross to bear is me, and to be that – to be this – is a curse I must fight.
When the first true
blood-shift came, it tore through flesh and parted blood, threatening to bend
me, break bone, shatter my mind and entrap my heart to become its will. It
comes with
vicious intent, moving my thoughts and touching me with a cutting effect from
the inside. It has many ways of
bleeding out, and when it releases, there is nothing I can do to stop it. No
one is safe when it entraps me in its claws of foul lust.
Corrupt,
damnable, depraved, destructive, hideous, demonic; your kind would call it many
things. I have a weapon against the profane that becomes me – his touch alone
has the power to release the talons of a sweet darkness that clings on for dear
life. It has one trigger – my guilt. I can change it if only I can take the
leap, surrender myself utterly. I am ready with all of me, for all of him.
I know what I have
to do, the desperation of it pulls my mind with the unfathomable determination
of a ravenous predator. I let it sink in hard and true. I feel the swell of the
fight fill me with a bitter sweetness, and with a glorious soothing pain that
tears my mind from the disease which transforms me. My loss has become my fight
as I watch it all wither away. But, I will never stop fighting. I am my own
destiny; my destiny is to be with him. And the Truth-seekers of this prophecy
will not take it lightly.
Everything else
becomes Evanescent.
